What inspired the creation of Gourmetmiles and its focus on digitizing diet monitoring for holistic health?
America’s lack of diet awareness. There are hundreds of apps that track calories. But our diet problems go well beyond calories. No other app tracks the other possible causes of diet related illnesses experienced by nearly half of the U.S. population. The American diet is loaded with food preservatives, food coloring, artificial flavors, synthetic additives, and other processed ingredients that make foods last longer, look fresher, and taste better. Gourmetmiles was created based on the need for complete diet awareness.
How does Gourmetmiles differentiate itself from other diet tracking apps, especially in terms of its accuracy and range of tracked nutrients?
Our competitors have mastered the art of calorie counting. But Gourmetmiles is the only solution that also captures ingredient data. For both packaged and restaurant foods. This allows users to not only track calories and nutrients, but also get alerts on processed ingredients, food preservatives, artificial colors, and artificial flavors. We do this by digitizing restaurant menus and leveraging packaged food data available through USDA’s FoodData Central. We have also addressed the age-old mystery of the “serving size”. We’re still a relatively new company. But we have already received positive feedback from our users on the simplicity of identifying potentially harmful ingredients. These ingredients are required to be listed on packaged foods by federal law. But they remain hidden in plain sight as most consumers can’t pronounce them much less understand what they are. Ever heard of azodicarbonamide? We didn’t think so. Through a simple scan or product search, Gourmetmiles explains in plain English what azodicarbonamide is and why it is bad for you.

Gourmetmiles didn’t invent the wheel. In our case, the USDA did. In 2019 the USDA created a massive repository of packaged, natural, and restaurant foods. This database was intended for researchers, policy makers, health professionals, and product developers (like us) to leverage its nutrition data for research and public awareness purposes. Gourmetmiles is the only major app that was built around this database. Giving our app the advantage of years of research and data collection to provide our users with accurate, complete, reliable data about the foods they eat.
