You’ve probably heard good things about both of these meal delivery services, but you should know from the get-go that unfortunately Plated no longer exists. The company stopped offering subscriptions a few years ago and then disappeared from grocery stores as well.
So if you want to know which service comes first in the Plated vs. Sunbasket battle, the answer is simple: Sunbasket, which is alive and thriving. But there are still reasons to compare the two. Perhaps you used Plated before it shut down and want to know if Sunbasket is a suitable alternative? Similar to Sunbasket, Plated used to cater to a range of specialist diets and had a wide menu to choose from.
Offering both meal kits and prepared meals, Sunbasket is a great choice for anyone who wants to eat healthy, diverse food. You have no reason to mourn Plated’s demise when there are such fine alternatives around. You can check these out in our list of the best meal delivery services of today.
Read on for my in-depth review or take a look at the following table for a summary of what Plated used to offer compared to Sunbasket’s current offerings.

Sunbasket has recipes dedicated to many specific diets. You can choose between vegetarian, pescatarian, paleo, gluten-free, and diabetes-friendly options, as well as carb-conscious meals for keto followers. Despite there being no dedicated vegan plan, some meals on the vegetarian plan are vegan friendly.
For those that want to lose weight or stay in shape, there are also recipes with less than 600 calories on the Lean & Clean plan. And if you want a healthy diet that includes whole grains and plenty of veg, the Mediterranean plan might be just your thing.
You can easily sort through recipes on the website by eliminating ingredients you don’t want, such as dairy, soy, or gluten. However, you should be aware that the same facility handles all ingredients, so be extra careful if you have a severe allergy.
A big plus is that almost 100% of Sunbasket’s ingredients are certified organic so you can be sure you’re getting only the best quality produce.
While Plated no longer delivers meals, it used to provide meal kits to satisfy a variety of diets including gluten-free, balanced, vegetarian, pescatarian, low-carb, and low-calorie. Unlike Sunbasket, Plated didn’t offer any vegan meals.
Plated used fully organic ingredients in its recipes wherever possible, hormone and antibiotic-free meat, and sustainably sourced fish. Similar to Sunbasket, Plated offered excellent customization options allowing you to mix and match meals from different plans so that you could create the perfect menu for your dietary needs.
I was really impressed with the large selection Sunbasket puts forward, be it prepared meals, meal kits, or extras.
The menu consists of well over 40 weekly dishes split between prepared meals and meal kits. The recipes are inspired by international cuisine, from Spicy Thai Green Curry with Shrimp, Zucchini, and Jasmine Rice to Yucatecan Sopa de Lima with Shredded Chicken and Tortilla Chips.
Most of the weekly dishes are presented as dinners but there are also tons of extras available including breakfast, lunch, proteins, snacks, pasta, and ready-made sauces. There are so many things you can add to your cart, from sliced prosciutto to organic vegan butter, it just blew my mind. There’s even coffee!
When Plated was still in business, it offered 20 dishes weekly. Recipes varied in terms of difficulty and cuisine but you would’ve been blown away by dishes such as Chicken Horiatiki with Toasted Za’atar Chickpeas and Feta or Saucy Meatball Sliders with Classic Caesar Salad.
The add-ons offered by Plated weren’t as extensive as those from Sunbasket but desserts could be added to your order for an additional $4 per serving.
If you order from Sunbasket, the prices vary depending on the type of meal you choose (prepared or meal kit), how many meals you order per week, and for how many people.
For meal kits, the price per serving starts from $10.99 for 3-5 meals per week for four people and $13.99 for two meals per week for two.
For prepared meals, you’ll pay $11.99 per serving for four meals per week dropping to $9.99 per serving if you order eight meals. Each meal is a single serving, which is great if you’re cooking for one or have different dietary restrictions from your partner or family. Shipping is an additional $9.99 for every order.
This may be more expensive than some other meal delivery services, but if you use our special discount, you can save $90 and get four free gifts, so your first order will be a bargain.
Plated used to be one of the more expensive meal delivery services. It offered plans for meals consisting of 2-4 servings for 2-4 nights of the week.
The price was $9.95 when you ordered three or four servings per meal but this rose to $11.95 when just two servings were ordered. In addition, there was a shipping charge of $7.95 for orders less than $60 so two servings for two nights could turn out to be quite expensive.
Sunbasket ships to most zip codes in the United States, excluding AK, HI, MT, ND, and parts of NM. You can usually choose any delivery day from Sunday to Thursday, but depending on your location, your choices may be limited to guarantee freshness.
Plated offered delivery to most of the US but couldn’t deliver to AK, HI, and some cities in Texas, including San Antonio. Delivery was guaranteed by 8 pm on your selected delivery day, which was dependent on your zip code.
When it comes to packaging, most of Sunbasket’s is made from biodegradable or compostable materials like paper, cardboard, cotton, and recycled denim. Many of the elements can be reused, such as boxes with an attractive, colorful print that can be repurposed as storage boxes around the house.
The small amount of plastic that does come with the packaging can also be recycled depending on your location, so make sure to check out your nearby facilities.
Plated meals used to arrive with a lot of packaging. Boxes were insulated to guarantee freshness until midnight of the delivery day so you never needed to rush home to pick up your delivery. One of the good things about its packaging was the compostable jute which was used to protect the box contents.
Sadly, that was the only good thing about Plated’s packaging as the individual, pre-portioned ingredients were wrapped in plastic and Plated used Styrofoam in its packaging.
Sunbasket offers four types of meals. For those looking for quick, prepared meals, choose from its Fresh & Ready range that are ready to eat in minutes. The rest are types of meal kits, which vary based on the skill level required to put them together.
Pre-Prepped meal kits arrive with pre-chopped ingredients and ready-made sauces, so you only need to do the final cooking. These are ready in 15-20 minutes and require the least amount of skill.
Then there are the Classic meal kits that let you do the prepping and take about 30 minutes. The recipes are still easy to follow, so no need to worry if you’re not an experienced cook.
If you want a challenge, you can opt for the Chef’s Table meal kits. These take longer to make and feature premium, unique ingredients. They also cost more.
Plated only offered meal kits and not prepared meals. Like Sunbasket’s Pre-Prepped meal kits, all the chopping, slicing, and dicing was done for you, which saved a lot of time.
Of course, the winner is Sunbasket. From the variety of recipes to the different levels of cooking to its commitment to organic produce, Sunbasket easily justifies the price of its meals. If you’re still not sure it’s the right choice for you, our in-depth review covers every aspect of the service in greater detail.
