What does a truly personalized nutrition strategy look like in practice, and how do you tailor it for each individual client?

The truly personalized nutrition strategy goes beyond just goal setting and basic nutrition education. In my opinion, in order to create the motivation to change within a person, you need to instill in them a pathway, a sort of guide or a map from where they are to where they want to go. This pathway can differ dramatically for each individual. I have some clients who are just looking to clean up their diets by incorporating more whole foods. I have others who have a sense of urgency about changing their nutrition because of a recent diagnosis or a change in a health condition. Therefore, it's important to me to not only give them the resources, tools, and information they need to set goals, but to be able to strategically put those resources in place. They need to know that by following a specific plan and strategy, the likelihood of them achieving the results they want is significantly improved and increased.

Can you share an example of advanced diagnostics revealing insights that changed a client’s health trajectory?

I utilize advanced diagnostics to assess individuals' needs, and one specific client perfectly illustrates how these tools can dramatically change a health trajectory.

One particular client was experiencing a number of minor symptoms: changes in stool, fatigue, increased bloating after meals, and overall low energy. She was already beginning to clean up her diet by adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, moving away from regular fast food and high-fat, high-sugar foods.

After performing a gut health assessment using a stool sample, the results were clear: her gut microbiome was severely off-balance, showing high levels of 'bad' bacteria and low levels of 'good' bacteria. This analysis was the key. It not only confirmed the cause of her symptoms but also provided the specific data needed to build a precise plan. We immediately started her on a targeted probiotic, as her current diet wasn't providing the beneficial bacteria she needed. Most importantly, we used the information from the report to customize her meal plan and food list, pinpointing specific foods to incorporate and others to temporarily avoid. The test was an indication of what was happening, but the information presented was what allowed us to customize the solution. Over the course of some months, we saw this translate into her feeling better after meals, no longer experiencing bloating, and having dramatically improved energy levels. It was the combination of the targeted probiotic and the customized diet, guided by the diagnostic data, that produced the necessary results.

You describe your service as “concierge-style.” How does this model enhance client outcomes compared to traditional dietitian services?

Having worked in healthcare as a clinical dietitian and as a military dietitian, I've seen the best of both worlds when it comes to tailoring the concierge service I provide. I believe my clients and patients need to develop independence in their nutrition habits and in incorporating the necessary tools and resources. However, for most people, there is a gap in knowledge and access to this information. The concierge service I provide is twofold: First, it gives them the mental bandwidth to focus on the immediate goals we set. Second, it gives them an opportunity to see modeling in action. The tailored recommendations I provide initially—the meal services, the menu adjustments, or any applicable supplement advice—show them how to connect those actions to the results they see. We then transition our work so that they are able to implement those tools and services independently. That's the goal. I always say I know I’m at the end of a journey with a client when they can pretty much do most things for themselves. Their ultimate success is being able to follow and lead a healthy lifestyle on their own.

How do you integrate a client’s lifestyle—work, family, fitness, stress—into your nutrition plans, and why is that integration crucial to long-term success?

I am a firm believer in a holistic approach to health and nutrition. I am also pretty realistic: while people have the highest of ambitions when it comes to making changes in their diet, they often have those ambitions without fully considering their day-to-day life, schedule, and environment. It is my duty to identify those potential barriers—work, family, fitness, and stress—and work through them initially. At the end of the day, you can give the best meal plan that is macro-balanced and appropriate with all the essential nutrients, but if a client can't implement it because they have two kids, work full-time, and are balancing a number of other things, it’s pretty useless. Integrating all the factors that go into a client's life is absolutely key. Ensuring clients can transition from where they are to where they want to be, in a way that reduces stress and yields improvements in their health and wellness, is the ultimate success. Not considering those things impedes long-term success.

What personal or professional experiences most influenced your commitment to a holistic, science-backed approach to nutrition and wellness?

Early on in my career in dietetics, I became a mother and was working full-time at the local WIC clinic. After my pregnancy, I needed to lose about 80 pounds to stay in the Army's standard for height and weight. Juggling full-time employment with motherhood and a deployed husband, I knew I couldn't approach this in an uneducated way. I could have yielded to anecdotal evidence or tried fad diets, but I knew that to be successful and avoid weight regain, I needed an evidence-based approach to my own weight loss. Even as a Dietitian, I felt the pain of trying to filter through all of the nutrition information out there. That entire experience really lent me a different lens when it came to my clients and patients. I understood that there is a lot of nutrition misinformation out here, and I wanted to provide them with a balanced, science-backed approach that I could confidently share, knowing it could yield results and get them to where they wanted to be.
