The Best Meal Delivery Services for Diabetes Reviewed

1. Diabetic Diet-to-Go – Best for Diabetes-Specific Meal Delivery

diabetic diet-to-go menu, Parmesan-Spinach Stuffed Chicken

Diabetic Diet-to-Go's Parmesan-Spinach Stuffed Chicken

Key Features

  • Prepared meals make it easy to stick to your plan

  • 100+ choices per week

  • 4 dietary options including Balance, Balance-Diabetes, Keto-Carb30, and Vegetarian

  • Current deal: Save 50% Off

Diabetic Diet-to-Go is my top pick for diabetics for this year because it caters its entire menu to diabetics. You can choose from any of its diet-specific meal plans like Balance, Balance-Diabetes, KetoCarb30, or Vegetarian.

What you’ll notice right away with Diabetic Diet-to-Go is that most of its meals are super low-carb. But fear not, you’ll still have a large selection of choices that contain carbs, like the Turkey Burger and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, so don’t feel like you’ll be forced to forego carbs forever.

You can also select from a number of international cuisines, including classic American, Italian, Thai, French, and more, so you’ll always have lots of exciting and intriguing meals to choose from.

Diabetic Diet-to-Go also offers a wide range of lean meats and low-calorie, nutritionally dense proteins. You’ll find things like turkey, chicken, kale, and tuna. I definitely appreciate these choices over more calorie-dense foods like minced beef, fattier cuts of pork, and processed ingredients.

2. Home Chef – Best for Whole Foods-Based, Diabetic-Friendly Meal Kits

home chef menu, Spinach Artichoke-Stuffed Chicken Breast

Home Chef's Spinach Artichoke-Stuffed Chicken Breast

Key Features

Home Chef is a great option if you’re diabetic, thanks to its mostly whole foods-based ingredients and meals. It does still offer a large assortment of “cheat” foods as well, so if you wanted to, you could always add some of those to your order. You’ll also get access to a good assortment of low-calorie and carb-conscious meals.

If you don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, Home Chef offers around six oven-ready meals at any given time that take fewer than 20 minutes to heat up. Likewise, if you enjoy getting adventurous and cooking your own meals, you can do that, too. You can also choose from around six to eight <30-minute meal kits if you like to cook but don’t necessarily want to spend tons of time doing so.

There’s also a wide range of international cuisines on offer. You’ll find classic American, Italian, Greek, Latin American, Szechuan (Chinese), and more. I’ve found that most dishes are generally quite balanced in terms of fats, proteins, and carbs, so if you prefer to eat low-carb, I recommend clicking the option at the top of the menu.

3. Nutrisystem – Best for Weight Loss-Specific Diet Plans

nutrisystem menu, Merlot Beef with Root Vegetables

Nutrisystem’s Merlot Beef with Root Vegetables

Key Features

  • Unique weight-loss plans for women, men, partners, vegetarians, and over 55s

  • 150+ weekly meal options including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks

  • 3+ dietary options including vegetarian, weight loss, and diabetic-friendly

  • Current deal: 50% Off All Plans + Free Shipping!

Nutrisystem is a bit different from any other company on this list since it’s a specific weight loss-diet program designed to help you lose weight effortlessly. It offers plans for men, women, partners, vegetarians, those over 55 years of age, and diabetics, which is a solid selection.

Everything you get from Nutrisystem is prepared, which means zero prep, cooking, or cleanup. Some of the meals you’ll get require simple heating in the microwave for up to five minutes, and some will be ready to eat right away, like a number of its breakfast items.

Nutrisystem is super convenient and easy to fit into your life, as you can order enough food for five or seven days per week – depending on your preferences – and each order provides enough meals for one month. Though you may find a bit more processed food than is ideal, it still offers a massive selection of whole foods-based meals ideal for diabetics.

4. Blue Apron – Best for Nutritious Meals For Families

blue apron menu, Thai-Style Glazed Tilapia

Blue Apron's Thai-Style Glazed Tilapia

Key Features

  • Mostly whole foods-based meals with lots of low-carb options

  • 20+ unique recipes per week

  • Lots of dietary options including WW-approved and diabetes-friendly

  • Current deal: Enjoy $130 off across your first 6 orders

Blue Apron offers an excellent array of both meal kits and prepared meals. The meal kits take anywhere from about 20 minutes to almost two hours to prepare (most are around 30 minutes). Its prepared meals can be heated up in about three to four minutes, depending on the strength of your microwave. You can find the prepared meals by looking for the “Heat & Eat” badge on the menu.

There’s a choice of plans on offer, including Wellness, Signature for 2, or Signature for 4 meals, and you can also access a variety of add-ons like appetizers, sides, breakfasts, and desserts. You’ll find a healthy selection of lower-carb offerings along with regular, balanced meals, so it’s completely up to you how you prefer to eat.

Some of Blue Apron’s meals are also USDA-certified organic – however, it doesn’t clearly tell you which ingredients it means, exactly. Although that’s not the most helpful, it’s really not a deal breaker for me as most other meal delivery services don’t promise any organic ingredients at all.

5. Green Chef – Best for 30-Minute Meal Kits

green chef menu, Korean Chili Steak & Shrimp Fried Rice

Green Chef's Korean Chili Steak & Shrimp Fried Rice

Key Features

  • Choose USDA-certified produce and eggs

  • 30 unique weekly recipes

  • Lots of dietary options including Keto + Paleo, Veggie, Gluten-Free, and more

  • Current deal: Get $250 Off + Free Shipping

Green Chef is one of my personal favorite meal delivery services. It offers a large selection of whole foods-based, diabetic-friendly meals and add-ons. Along with its certified-organic produce and eggs, it also promises that all of its proteins are raised with high animal welfare standards.

There are no prepared meals available. However, all its meal kits only take between 20-45 minutes to prepare, with most taking  25-30 minutes, which means you won’t have to spend tons of time in the kitchen.

There are a lot of different cuisines on offer, so you won’t get bored of eating the same meals over and over. Green Chef offers a ton of international recipes ranging from Peruvian (and Latin American), Italian, French, classic American, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Mediterranean, and more.

6. HelloFresh – Best for Simple and Easy Meal Kits

hellofresh menu, Beef Tenderloin & Balsamic Steak Sauce

HelloFresh's Beef Tenderloin & Balsamic Steak Sauce

Key Features

HelloFresh offers up an impressive selection of weekly meals across lots of plans and dietary options. Its specific plans include Meat & Veggies, Veggie, Family-Friendly, Fit & Wholesome, Quick & Easy, and Pescatarian .

Though HelloFresh doesn’t offer any prepared meals, it offers an abundance of Quick & Easy meal kits that take 20 minutes or under to prepare. In general, its meal kits take about 20-40 minutes to prepare and are mostly made up of whole foods-based ingredients like fresh meats, veggies, and nutritious carbohydrates like potatoes and rice.

You’ll find meals like chicken, flatbreads, schnitzel, quesadillas, stuffed peppers, mac and cheese, shrimp, turkey bowls, and a ton more. You’ll also be able to sample a range of international cuisines, including Latin American, Italian, classic American, French, Korean, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Indian, just to name a few.

7. Purple Carrot – Best for Plant-Based Eating

purple carrot menu, Italian Butter Bean Stew

Purple Carrot's Italian Butter Bean Stew

Key Features

  • Vegan meal kits and prepared meals offer flexibility and convenience

  • 30+ recipes per week including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks

  • Gluten-free and high-protein meals available

  • Current deal: Get $30 Off with code carrot30

Purple Carrot is the best meal delivery service for vegans since it only offers plant-based meal kits and prepared meals. You won’t find any animal-based ingredients or by-products here.

You’ll also find a good selection of gluten-free, high-protein, and Quick & Easy meal options. Its Quick & Easy meal kits take around 15 minutes to prepare which means less time spent in the kitchen. Of course, the prepared meals can be heated up within about three minutes.

What I like most about Purple Carrot, though, is its commitment to making vegan eating as enjoyable as possible. You might think that it becomes easy to get bogged down when your diet is so restrictive – but not with Purple Carrot. It offers a good selection of international cuisines that keep things fresh including Chinese, Latin American, Italian, Greek, Indian, and of course, a little bit of classic American as well.

8. Marley Spoon – Best Healthy and High-Quality Meal Delivery Service

marley spoon menu, Easy Prep! Tuscan Sheetpan Chicken

Marley Spoon's Easy Prep! Tuscan Sheetpan Chicken

Key Features

  • Access meals that have been developed in partnership with Martha Stewart

  • 45+ unique recipes per week

  • Lots of dietary options including low-carb, low-calorie, and dairy-free

  • Current deal: Get $190 off Your First 4 Boxes!

One of my favorite things about Marley Spoon is its partnership with Martha Stewart, so you know its meals are high quality. The fact that you can get a large assortment of meals from its Health & Diet category is a big plus.

Marley Spoon also offers some organic ingredients, and its chicken products fit the NAE category for “No Antibiotics, Ever”. Overall, you can expect top-notch, wholesome, minimally processed, and nutritionally-dense foods.

You’ll find some international cuisines like Moroccan, Middle Eastern, Italian, Latin American, and more, but I’ve found most of the recipes to be fairly Americanized. That also means its recipes are largely kid-friendly (though, it does offer meals specifically labeled kid-friendly as well).

9. Freshly – Best for Gluten-Free Prepared Meals

freshly menu, Heartland Turkey Meatloaf

Freshly's Heartland Turkey Meatloaf

Key Features

  • Most convenient meal delivery service for diabetics

  • 45+ recipes per week for you to choose from

  • Tons of dietary options like gluten-free, plant-based, carb-smart, and calorie-conscious

  • Current deal: Get $175 off your first 7 boxes!

Freshly is one of my go-to meal delivery services if you’re too busy (or don’t like) to cook. Its prepared meals make it simple and effortless to eat nutritious, minimally processed foods without spending more than about three minutes in the kitchen.

Once you sign up for an account, you’ll have access to a pretty in-depth filtering system on the menu. You’ll be able to sort by things like protein, carbs, calories, sodium, total fat, gluten-free, carb-conscious, dairy-free, and plant-based. From here, you can also filter by each of Freshly’s specific plan options, including Freshly Fit, Signature Collection, Protein & Sides, Purely Plant, or the full menu.

You can choose from a number of different international cuisines including Latin American, Italian, French, Cajun/Creole, Thai, Indian, and more. I’ve found most of the dishes to be largely Americanized to cater to broader flavor preferences, though.

10. EveryPlate – Most Affordable Meal Delivery

freshly menu, Turkey & Green Pepper Tacos

EveryPlate's Turkey & Green Pepper Tacos

Key Features

  • Lots of quick and easy 30-minute meal kits for the whole family

  • 20+ unique recipes per week

  • Option for vegetarian meal kits

  • Current deal: $1.39/meal On Your 1st Box

What I like most about EveryPlate is its no-frills approach to meal kits. It offers highly competitive pricing (the cheapest in the industry), and it doesn’t skimp on quality as a result. Usually, the lower the meal price, the lower the quality, but I found that to be the exact opposite here. The quality is on-par with services like Blue Apron, Home Chef, Marley Spoon, and Green Chef.

One thing that keeps the prices low, however, is the omission of more exotic and fancy meals – but again, this doesn’t mean lower quality. You just may not find the meals to be as adventurous as some of its competitors. There are still a ton of cuisines to choose from, like Italian, Greek, Mediterranean, Latin American, and more, so don’t feel like you have to eat boring, bland meals as a diabetic if you choose to go with EveryPlate.

You’ll have access to four distinct plan categories – Meat & Veggie, Veggie, Family Friendly, and Quick & Easy. I think EveryPlate comes in at a very attractive price with a solid selection of meal options if you’re okay with foregoing some of the “fancier” and more exotic ingredients and meals.

FAQ

What is the best prepared meal delivery service for diabetics?

There really is no single “best” prepared meal delivery service for diabetics – however, I recommend going with a service that offers meals that cater to diabetics. The best meal delivery service for this year for diabetics is Diabetic Diet-to-Go as everything on offer is specifically designed for diabetics.

Can diabetics order meal plans?

Generally, yes. It’s still always best to consult with your doctor first before changing anything drastic about your diet. In the meantime, if you’re looking for nutritious meals that support good health and contain little sugar and processed ingredients, I recommend checking out Home Chef.

Are Ready Meals OK for diabetics?

Yes, prepared meals (ready meals) are as good for diabetics as any other food. As some prepared meals tend to contain more processed ingredients than others, I’d recommend sticking to more whole foods-based prepared meals. For example, the highly nutritious prepared meals from Blue Apron contain very few processed ingredients so you can make sure you’re maintaining optimal health.
