10 Best Meal Delivery Services for Diabetes 2022: Updated List

When you’re trying to manage your blood sugar and keep diabetes under control, often the only way you can guarantee carb-conscious meals free from hidden sugars is to cook from scratch. But all of this takes time and energy we don’t always have.

Thankfully, there are some meal delivery services out there ready to do the calorie-counting for you, promising healthy, diabetes-friendly dishes, whether you want ingredients to cook yourself or a ready-meal to pop in the microwave.

While some can offer limited menus or hike up the prices of their diabetic meals, making a long-term subscription unsustainable, Sunbasket is a company that offers both variety and flexibility, all at a reasonable cost.

It’s also approved by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) – and that’s why it’s come in at the top of my list.

As for the others on this list, my team and I have delved deep to bring you the companies that practice fair pricing while providing exciting and tasty meals. So keep reading to discover which you can trust with your health and your money!

The Best Meal Delivery Services for Diabetes Reviewed

1. Sunbasket – Best Overall Meal Delivery Service for Diabetes

Peruvian Lomo Saltado with Beef, Tomatoes & Spicy Chimichurri

Key Features

  • Organic produce, wild-caught seafood, and more

  • Dedicated Diabetes-Friendly plan

  • Meal kits and prepared meals

  • Current deal: $90 off Plus a Free Gift!

Sunbasket is a healthy meal delivery service that brings fresh, seasonal ingredients and easy recipes to your door each week. Its offerings are varied, so your box can include an assortment of meal kits, prepared meals, snacks, and even store-cupboard essentials.

The Diabetes-Friendly menu features ADA-approved recipes promising 10g or more of protein, 20-70g or less of high-quality carbs (that’s whole grains, beans, fruits, and veggies), and less than 700mg of sodium per serving.

There’s more than enough variety on the menu to keep the most discerning diabetics well-fed each week. But if you want to mix and match across other plans, you can do that too, as my colleague’s review explains.

You can order either two or four servings per recipe, or pick up single-serving prepared meals for those nights you’re in a hurry. Prices start from $4.27 per serving – but don’t miss Sunbasket’s excellent deals for first-time subscribers!

2. Nutrisystem – Best Diabetes Plan For Weight Loss

Classic Hamburger

Key Features

  • Calorie-controlled for convenience

  • Keeps blood-sugar levels steady with six small meals per day

  • Weight-maintenance plan available once you meet your goals

  • Current deal: 50% Off All Plans + Free Shipping!

Nutrisystem is a portion-controlled meal delivery service designed to encourage steady weight loss. It features a range of different plans, three of which are diabetes-friendly: Basic Diabetes, Uniquely Yours Diabetes, and the Uniquely Yours Ultimate Diabetes plan.

Each plan offers more than 100 pre-packaged meals and snacks, providing around 200 calories per serving. You’ll find comfort-food favorites like cinnamon rolls, mac and cheese, and the classic hamburger pictured, but the service also encourages you to consume four servings of non-starchy veg per day, including bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes.

My colleague goes more into how Nutrisystem works in this in-depth review.

The Basic plans start at $8.54, making this one of the cheapest diet meal delivery services I’ve seen. But keep in mind that you must order an entire month’s worth of meals at a time, and you’ll need to factor in the cost of additional vegetables, fruits, and dairy products from the grocery store.

3. BistroMD – Best For Doctor-Designed Meals

Blackened Chicken with Creamy Smoked Paprika Sauce

Key Features

  • Small-batch meals prepared with farm-sourced ingredients

  • Large menu of more than 150 entrees

  • Support from a team of registered dietitians

  • Current deal: Get 25% Off + Free Shipping

Founded by physician Dr Caroline Cederquist, BistroMD’s menu is based on nutritional and metabolic science. The Diabetic-Friendly plan includes customizable, chef-prepared meals designed to help you maintain healthy blood glucose levels and stave off cravings.

A typical day might look like Caramelized Mushroom and Onion Frittata for breakfast, Beef with Red Wine Sauce and Barley for lunch, before ending the day with Blackened Chicken or Spinach- and Feta-Stuffed Salmon. Sounds tasty, right?

All the meals on the Diabetic-Friendly Program contain 25g or less of net carbs per serving and are free from trans fats and MSG. Find out more about what you can expect when your box arrives in my colleague’s BistroMD review.

You can choose to subscribe to the full seven-day program (that’s seven breakfasts, seven lunches, and six dinners per week), the full five-day program, or you can just stick to lunches and dinners five or seven days a week if you want to. It’s totally up to you!

4. Blue Apron – Best Diabetes-Friendly Meals For Couples

Romesco Chicken & Poblano Pepper with Currant Couscous

Key Features

Blue Apron regularly incorporates healthier recipes into its varied and exciting meal kits, making it a solid and sustainable option for people living with diabetes.

In particular, the Wellness plan emphasizes low-calorie, nutrient-dense meals – think Seared Salmon and Saffron Potatoes, or the Romesco Chicken dish (pictured). I love how gourmet the recipes are – diet food this certainly isn’t! You can also find out what my colleague thought when they delved more into the menu.

Since every dish on the Wellness plan is designed for two, the nutritionist-approved meal kits are particularly great for couples. The recipes are also easy to follow, so even novice cooks will enjoy learning how to whip up new carb-conscious meals in the kitchen.

Prices start from $5.74 per serving, so in terms of affordability, this is one of my top picks.

5. Green Chef – Best For Certified Organic Ingredients

Barramundi with Chimichurri, Sauteed Zucchini, Red Bell Pepper & Pepitas

Key Features

  • Lots of gluten-free options

  • Easy-to-follow recipes, including pre-prepped ingredients

  • Plans include Plant-Powered, Keto + Paleo, and Balanced Living

  • Current deal: Get $135 Off + Free Shipping

Green Chef is a great meal delivery service for anyone who wants to cook their own healthy, balanced meals at home. And though it doesn’t have a dedicated diabetes menu, the Keto + Paleo plan has lots of low-carb, high-protein, high-fat options that are linked to better blood-sugar management.

Learn how to cook meals like Barramundi with Chimichurri, all of which will come in at less than 15g of carbs per serving. As well as being organic, the quality of the ingredients is phenomenal and everything is sustainably sourced. My colleague reveals more in this Green Chef review.

Prices start at $5.99 per serving, and you can order for up to six people per week, making this a great option for families.

6. Factor – Best Prepared Meals For Active Lifestyles

Pesto Salmon with Creamed Spinach & Tomato Butter Haricot Verts

Key Features

  • Keto meals to stabilize blood-sugar levels

  • Plant-based options available

  • Single-serving meals ready in minutes

  • Current deal: $130 Off your first 6 boxes!

Factor is another of my recommendations for diabetics because of its keto dishes. You’ll find more than 29 meals on the menu each week, all perfectly portioned and averaging around 600 calories per dish, making it easy to track what you’re putting into your body.

When you sign up, you’ll be able to schedule a complimentary nutrition consultation with an in-house dietitian to discuss your needs, plus, the company offers a range of add-ons – such as breakfasts, smoothies, sides, and desserts – designed to work with your diet.

Find out more about these extra services in my colleague’s Factor review.

Factor lets you order between four and 18 meals every week, so you can adjust your subscription to suit your lifestyle. This is a great option for anyone who wants to have healthy, heat-and-eat meals to hand on busy weeknights.

7. Magic Kitchen – Best Prepared Meals For Health Conditions

Shrimp Scampi

Key Features

  • Low-sodium, controlled-carb meals

  • A la carte options and bundles available

  • Reheat in the microwave or oven for easy prep

Magic Kitchen offers dietitian-approved meals designed to suit the needs of most diets, lifestyles, and health conditions.

The Diabetic-Friendly meal plan, featuring dishes like the buttery Shrimp Scampi (pictured), mostly comprises nutritionally-complete meals that contain between 20-45g of carbs per serving, which makes counting your carb and calorie intake a breeze.

The dishes are flash-frozen for easy storage, and will generally contain a main protein and one or two sides packaged up in the same container, ready to be reheated in the microwave or oven.

Unlike many other meal delivery services, Magic Kitchen lets you order its dishes à la carte, but you can also set up automatic shipments on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Pricing varies depending on each order, but starts at $9.49.

8. Home Bistro – Best For Premium Quality Prepared Meals

Turkey and Vegetable Kabob

Key Features

  • Innovative, celebrity chef-designed meals

  • Order meals and bundles at your convenience

  • Dedicated diabetic-friendly meals

  • Current deal: FREE SHIPPING ON ORDERS OVER $75

Home Bistro promises nothing less than the highest quality when it comes to its celebrity chef-designed meals. Its flash-frozen, diabetic-friendly offerings include tasty-sounding dishes like Lentil Herbed Baguette, Saucy Chicken Tagine With Couscous, and Turkey and Vegetable Kabob (pictured).

My favorite part is that Home Bistro lets you order meals without a subscription. You can order individual dishes or meal combos of five, six, seven, 10 or even 20 dishes at a time. This means you don’t have to worry about canceling or pausing your order at any point.

And do the meals really live up to gourmet expectations? Find out what my colleague thought when he gave this service a try!

While Home Bistro is on the expensive side, starting at $14.99 per serving, the chef collaborations and high-quality ingredients make it worth a try. Thanks to its a la carte ordering style, this could be one to save for when you feel like splurging for a special occasion but still want to stay on track.

9. Diabetic Diet-to-Go – Best Complete Plan For Type 2 Diabetics

Thai Turkey Tenderloin

Key Features

  • Dietitian-approved recipes

  • Also recommended for pre-diabetics

  • Enjoy meals five or seven days per week

  • Current deal: Save 50% Off

If you’re looking for a complete meal plan to help you stay on track, Diet-to-Go offers just that. It aims to make eating well easy and affordable with flash-frozen, chef-prepared meals you can zip in the microwave five or seven days a week.

The Balance-Diabetes plan follows ADA guidelines for recommended carbs, fat, and protein – so you can rest assured you’re getting everything you need in each meal. My colleague goes into more detail about what you can expect in your box, in this in-depth review.

Customize your plan with yummy, balanced dishes, including chicken pesto salad, blackened salmon, and waffles with blueberry cream cheese. Diet-to-Go is also pretty reasonably priced at $4.60 per serving – but account for shipping, too, which is a heftier $19.98 per week.

10. Purple Carrot – Best For Plant-Based Meals

Summer Nourish Bowls

Key Features

  • Meal kits and prepared meals – all 100% plant-based

  • Order vegan snacks and ingredients through the Plantry

  • Other dietary options include soy-free, nut-free, gluten-free, and more

  • Current deal: Get $30 Off with code carrot30

A well-balanced plant-based diet can be a great option for pre-diabetics or people living with diabetes.

Purple Carrot is one of my favorite meal kits because of the creativity it injects into everyday vegetables. Each week, you can choose from around twelve unique recipes including breakfast and lunch options.

One thing I love about Purple Carrot is its use of recyclable, eco-friendly materials in its packaging. Read more about my colleague’s experience with this service in their in-depth Purple Carrot review.

This service is only low on our list because it doesn’t offer a specific plan for people with diabetes, but its plant-powered meals are naturally healthy and low-glycemic. This is a high-quality vegan meal kit for anyone who wants to enjoy healthy, wholesome meals.

Tips for Choosing the Best Meal Delivery Services for Diabetes

Here’s what I kept in mind when researching the best meal delivery services for people with diabetes:

  • Are the meals in-line with nutritional guidelines? The best services follow guidelines set by the ADA for pre-diabetics and people with type 2 diabetes.

  • Are the meals doctor- or dietitian-approved? BistroMD, for example, was founded by a board-certified bariatric physician who understands the specific needs of diabetics.

  • Are the meals nutritious? Seek out those prepared with only fresh, high-quality ingredients. Sunbasket is one such company – it offers nothing less than healthy, vibrant, organic ingredients that are seasonal and sustainably sourced.

  • Does the service offer low-carb options? These are often recommended because a low-carb diet can help keep blood-sugar levels under control. Green Chef’s Keto + Paleo menu features dishes rich in protein and healthy fats, and low in carbs.

  • Could they help you lose weight? If you need to lose some pounds to help manage your diabetes, slow and steady is best. Nutrisystem has specialized weight loss plans that do just that.

Bottom Line: What’s the Best Meal Delivery Service for Diabetes?

Like any healthy eating regimen, a diabetes-friendly diet can be tough to follow on your own. Even if you avoid the temptation to give up, it’s all too easy to get stuck eating the same meals every day.

Rather than resign yourself to a dull diet, why not give meal delivery services a try?

Sunbasket is my top pick for diabetics because not only does it encourage you to learn new and exciting recipes, but it also has a great selection of healthy prepared meals for busy nights – allowing you to resist the urge to order takeout!

But there are many other services, like BistroMD, which take the convenience one step further by providing complete meal plans.

Whichever you choose, be sure to check in with your healthcare provider first. Diet is just one aspect of diabetes management, but meal delivery services can certainly save you a lot of stress. Not to mention all the tasty meals you’ll get to enjoy!

Does Blue Apron have meals for diabetics?

Though it doesn’t have a dedicated diabetes menu, Blue Apron’s Wellness plan features nutritionist-approved recipes that can work for diabetics as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

It has many carb- and calorie-conscious offerings that can help diabetics to manage their blood sugar levels.

Are HelloFresh meals diabetic-friendly?

HelloFresh is a meal kit delivery service that allows you to discover the joy of cooking. It features six plans, but none dedicated to people with diabetes.

Still, HelloFresh has a wide variety of carb- and calorie-smart and plant-based recipes, so you could choose the ones that fit your dietary needs. Each meal has step-by-step instructions and clear nutritional info, which makes it easy to find the ones that work for you.

Green Chef, which is owned by HelloFresh, is a pricier but better meal kit for people with diabetes. Its low-carb keto and paleo menus are great for low-glycemic diets.

What is the best meal for a diabetic to eat?

Each individual is different, which is why you need medical guidance in choosing a diet that works for you (talk with your physician about this). It doesn’t mean you can’t eat many of the same things as everyone else – you just have to be more careful with what you consume.

Foods that are rich in heart-healthy fats, vegetables, fruit, grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy are all good options. You also have to be conscious of your carb intake in order to avoid spikes in blood sugar. Sunbasket and Nutrisystem are just two meal delivery services with plans crafted for diabetic diets.
