The Farmer’s Dog Review 2023: Is Simpler Better?

Written by: Mirela Niculae on Dec 5th, 2022

The Farmer’s Dog is a fresh dog food subscription-based company that keeps both owners and dogs happy. The service is not only convenient for pet parents (easy, no-fuss orders), but the dogs get to enjoy vet-formulated, human-grade high-quality recipes focused on their health.

In all fairness, I was a bit skeptical at first. I mean, where’s the long list of amazing foods you can browse through and then have difficulties choosing from? To solve this conundrum, I did a review of The Farmer’s Dog based on our specialists’ opinions, my own experience with the brand, and reviews from long-term users.

While doing so, I found an easy-to-use fresh dog food service dedicated to making pet parents and their four-legged children’s lives easier. I also found a team of professionals who understand the importance of portion sizes, nutrient selection, and responsibly sourced whole ingredients in a dog’s diet. Keep reading to learn more.

The Farmer’s Dog Meals

Plans and Recipes

The Farmer’s Dog features four meal recipes designed by board-certified veterinary nutritionists that meet the nutritional levels required by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Plus, these recipes are fit for all life stages and most breeds.

The service guides you through the selection process and automatically creates a menu designed to fit your dog’s breed, age, and size. Also, if you mention your pooch’s health troubles the menu will be adjusted accordingly. True, this won’t change the content of the recipe, but the selection of meals and feeding recommendations will change.

All the ingredients are human-grade chopped and mixed into delicious meals. Ingredients are sourced from local farms, reputable food suppliers, or other suppliers who deliver human food following USDA standards. Many veterinarians prescribe The Farmer’s Dog food for chubby dogs trying to get to a healthy weight.

Even though it takes up space in my fridge, I like that the company doesn’t add preservatives (so the recipes aren’t shelf-stable) or growth hormones. It makes me feel confident that the food I’m feeding my dogs is healthy and helps them grow.

In the spirit of keeping things simple, The Farmer’s Dog only features four recipes and the food comes pre-portioned. Each recipe follows the same formula of meat and veggies plus beneficial vitamins and minerals. For the purpose of this review, I’ll analyze Jamie’s (my 10-year-old Akita Inu) turkey meal

The protein source in this recipe is turkey which is rich in ten amino acids essential for a dog’s health. The veggies combine chickpeas (rich in fiber), carrots (minerals and beta-carotene), broccoli (vitamin C), parsnip, spinach, and a proprietary nutrient blend.

You’ll also notice ingredients like fish oil, taurine, and chelated minerals. The fish oil is rich in EPA and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are extremely beneficial for dogs. Taurine is an important amino acid that keeps a dog’s heart healthy, and the chelated minerals are easier to absorb since they’ve been chemically attached to protein.

The Farmer’s Dog recipes are slightly cooked and then frozen to make sure all the ingredients retain their properties and deactivate any pathogens that may be present in raw foods. This process also keeps the food delicious and ready-to-eat as soon as it’s thawed.

Based on the ingredients listed on the label, The Farmer’s Dog turkey recipe does look like good quality wet food. This is supported by the data presented in the Guaranteed Analysis of the label (minimum 8% crude protein, 4.5% crude fat, and max 1.5% crude fiber).

The ratio of fat to protein shows the recipe contains generous amounts of meat. You’ll also receive a personalized recommendation on how much to feed your dog. For Jamie (a 75 lbs dog), TFD recommends 1216 calories per day.

The food is delivered frozen in a recyclable cardboard box with dry ice (to keep everything cold) and biodegradable insulation. Since everything is fresh and there are no preservatives, the food must be stored in the refrigerator or freezer. The food will last for up to five days in the refrigerator if it’s kept at the recommended temperature.

The bags are frozen flat, so this does help manage storage space a bit. Also, each package is pre-portioned for a day’s worth of food, so you have to do the final step of the portioning for each meal following the instructions on the label.

Luckily, each shipment comes with a reusable biodegradable cardboard container that makes it easy to keep an open package of food in the fridge.

Shipping & Delivery

The Farmer’s Dog ships for free to the 48 contiguous states in the U.S. and everything is scheduled automatically from the moment you place your first order. The first order is called a Trial Box and you’ll have two weeks to test if your pooch responds well to the new food.

All the meals are delivered within days of cooking so you can trust everything is fresh and tasty. You have full control over the shipping process since you can easily change the amount, ask for rush delivery, skip a week, or change your address.

Ordering from The Farmer’s Dog

Following the rules of simplicity, The Farmer’s Dog has a very easy-to-understand ordering system. Everything starts and ends with your dog’s specific needs in mind.

How to Sign Up

To create an account, click the Start Today button on the website. This will send you to a four-part questionnaire that collects information about your dog(s). While I did find the process a bit long (I have two dogs), I like the level of care that goes into preparing each meal menu.

Once you introduce the generic information about you and the dog(s), you’ll be asked to build profiles for each pooch. It’s important to deliver accurate information in this section because The Farmer’s Dog will use it to build a customized meal plan.

As soon as all your dogs’ profiles are complete and ready to go, the system will calculate their necessary daily caloric intake and decide on the best three meals for their needs. In my case, both my dogs received a combination of turkey, beef, and chicken.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is a recommendation. You can accept it and move forward with the order or you can change it (click on Change Recipes) by eliminating one of the recipes or adding one more.

Managing Your Subscription

Your account on the website stores the dogs’ profiles, order history, and shipping details. Everything is easy to understand and you can change various details in your subscription such as shipping dates, quantity, meals, and more.

Customer Service

Customer service is easy to reach via email or phone and they’re fast to react if there’s any problem. For instance, if your pooch isn’t satisfied with the food, you can call them up and let them know.

In most situations, you’ll have two options: opt for additional recipes to try or ask for a refund and donate the rejected food to a shelter. However, you should follow the instructions and introduce the food gradually, so the dog has time to adjust to a new type of meal.

The Farmer’s Dog Recalls

The Farmer’s Dog has a clean record when it comes to recalls. This goes to show just how serious the company is about a strict cooking process and rigorous safety standards.

The prices range from $2-$12/day, and one box contains the quantity of food your dog(s) will eat in a week. Now, each dog’s necessary quantity is calculated based on their size, age, and breed which means that big dogs will have a more expensive menu.

Newcomers get a discount and shipping’s free, but this isn’t a brand for pet parents on a tight budget. My order, for two reasonably large dogs, set me back about $122 for one week, which is pretty steep, but it’s worth trying it out.

Now, if Milo had been a 10lbs Pomeranian, his food would cost around $25 per week, which amounts to about $100 per month. In this scenario, it would be less of a burden on your budget, and your pooch can happily expect more delicious foods in the future.

The Bottom Line: Is The Farmer’s Dog Worth It?

I think it is. True, it’s pricier, but that’s normal to expect out of human-grade fresh food formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists and delivered to your doorstep. Plus, you get the right quantity and nutrients for your dog, which is amazing.

If you’re not yet convinced or you can’t afford the price, we tested and reviewed other top pet food delivery services. Read all about our top picks in this post.

The Farmer’s Dog works with board-certified veterinary nutritionists to formulate their meals and has a full-time animal nutritionist on staff. Also, vets all over the country recommend their recipes for weight loss and general health improvement.

2. How much does The Farmer's Dog food cost per day?

The Farmer’s Dog is a bit on the pricey side. However, the quality of vet-formulated fresh food cannot be compared to kibbles or brands that sell raw or canned dog food.

3. Is Farmer's Dog food grain-free?

All four recipes featured by The Farmer’s Dog brand are grain-free. These recipes contain human-grade ingredients and have generous amounts of fresh meat as the main source of quality protein.
