Overview

Fresh N Lean’s ready-to-heat meals make it easy to enjoy wholesome food without spending hours in the kitchen. You get all the nutrients and all the flavor with none of the prep and cleanup.

This is far from the only prepared meal delivery service, and it’s also not the only service to specialize in diet-friendly plans. I did some in-depth research to find out if Fresh N Lean is the best at what it does.

Overall, I think Fresh N Lean is great if you stick to a specific diet. Though it can be pricey, it has curated meals to suit keto, paleo, vegan, and other dietary needs. Read on to hear my detailed thoughts on this service.

What’s on the Fresh N Lean Menu

Fresh N Lean prides itself on its organic, locally-sourced ingredients. For meals that contain animal products, you’ll find only the highest standards in sustainability and animal welfare, regardless of which plan you choose.

Meal Options

Fresh N Lean’s menu is divided into 7 diets, each of which serves a particular niche. Let’s take a closer look:

  • Protein+: Includes free-range animal protein with every lunch/dinner meal, paired with organic vegetables and whole grains.

  • Keto: Clean meals that help you stay in ketosis, with daily meals totaling no more than 35g carbs while being super high in proteins and nutritious fat.

  • Paleo: High-quality animal products and organic vegetables, but without the grains or legumes.

  • Standard Vegan: Focuses on plant-based proteins, organic vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Vegetarian: Delicious plant-focused meals that include eggs and dairy in some meals.

  • Mediterranean Diet: This menu features organic whole foods, healthy fats, and sustainably sourced proteins.

  • Whole30 Approved: This final menu is designed to fit within the restrictions of the Whole30 diet. Meals are similar to the Paleo plan but without any natural sweeteners.

Customization

Fresh N Lean’s meal plans provide 10-12 lunch and dinner entrees as well as 2-12 breakfast entrees, ensuring variety without overlap. You can pick your own meals within your chosen plan. Customers can also customize their meals by omitting up to 3 ingredients from a selection of over 20, including allergens like soy, tree nuts, and shellfish.

All meals are gluten-free, but Fresh N Lean isn’t GIG-certified, so individuals with severe gluten allergies or celiac disease should exercise caution. The Vegan, Paleo, Protein+, and Whole30 plans are dairy-free, while the Keto and Mediterranean Diet plans include dairy products.

In addition to the meals on your plan, you can also order from the Bulk and A La Carte Menus. These extras can come in handy if you are looking to add more clean protein like bison, venison, or salmon filets to your diet.

Unboxing

Fresh N Lean shipments come in well-insulated containers, but you’ll want to transfer your meals into the fridge as soon as possible. The service doesn’t recommend storing its meals in the freezer, but you can find freezing guidelines on the Fresh N Lean website just in case.

Fresh N Lean claims to be passionate about sustainability, so it’s nice to see that most of the materials in its packaging are recyclable or biodegradable. However, recyclable packaging is only effective if everyone takes the time to actually recycle. I wish the meal delivery industry could further limit the amount of plastic waste.

Cooking with Fresh N Lean

Fresh N Lean offers a menu solely composed of prepared meals, so there’s never any prep. You won’t need to dirty a single pan or sharpen a single knife! Instead, simply pick a dish, poke a couple of holes in the plastic film, and microwave it for 2-3 minutes.

Fresh N Lean meals can also be easily reheated in the oven or on the stove if you don’t have a microwave. Just transfer the food from its plastic container into a more appropriate vessel first!

My Favorite Meals

I wish you could mix and match meals from different plans like you can with many other services, but I have to give Fresh N Lean props for how easily it lets you personalize your meals. Since dishes are prepared fresh every week, Fresh N Lean gives you the option to leave out any ingredients you don’t like or can’t eat.

I checked out a couple of the offerings on Fresh N Lean’s keto menu. Each of the fourteen lunch/dinner options looked tasty, but how did they fit into keto’s low-carb raison d’etre?

The Cage-Free Chicken Parmesan had the lowest net carbs, at only 3 grams. And because Fresh N Lean focuses on leaner eating, there were only 430 calories.

There are many other low-carb dishes on the menu. The Cod with Pesto and the Chicken Thighs with Almond Chipotle Sauce each have a net carb count of 16 grams, with no more than 480 calories each.

Most of the recipes are based on favorite American-style dishes. There’s also a smattering of delicious-looking Mexican and Asian-inspired dishes.

Fresh N Lean isn’t cheap, but I believe that the prices are a good value for what you’re getting. After all, these meals are cooked fresh every week using organic ingredients.

The actual price per meal varies depending on which plan you subscribe to. The Vegan Standard plan is the least expensive at around $8/meal, while the other plans – like those for keto and paleo dieters – are more expensive.

These “starting prices” only apply if you order the maximum number of meals per week. If you don’t choose to receive 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, the price per serving will go up. For example, if you only get one meal per day, the average cost per serving is over $15.

Overall, I think Fresh N Lean is priced fairly for what it provides. If you can afford the slightly higher prices, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth in organic, diet-friendly, freshly-made meals.

Shipping & Delivery

Fresh N Lean delivers across the entire U.S., which is good news for those of us in less populated areas. Packages are sent weekly for Friday delivery and guaranteed by Saturday (you’ll receive a tracking number). The company’s FAQs mention that delivery on other days is possible for an extra charge.

If you order meals à la carte instead, your shipment should arrive within 2 or 3 days.

How Fresh N Lean Works

I found Fresh N Lean’s sign-up process to be simple and straightforward. You can easily narrow down your menu and subscription preferences, and the pricing structure is refreshingly transparent.

How to Sign Up

It’s easy to sign up for a Fresh N Lean subscription with just a few clicks.

1. Click “Get Started” on the homepage. Then choose whether you want a weekly meal plan or whether you’d like to choose your meals a la carte.

2. If you want a meal plan, the next step is to select the right plan for your diet. Bear in mind that you’ll only be able to choose meals from within your chosen plan – you can’t mix and match between diet plans.

3. Customize your plan by choosing which daily meals you would like (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), and whether you want meals for 5 days or 7 days a week.

4. Next, you’ll be asked about extras. You can skip this step if you don’t want any.

5. Choose your optional snacks or meals. You can change the quantity as you add them. The price of each extra is clearly marked.

6. Review your order summary to make sure you’re happy with everything you’ve added. You can still go back and edit your plan or add more extras at this point.

7. Sign up for Fresh N Lean. You’ll need to do this to complete your order. On this screen you’ll also add your shipping and payment details.

8. Then you’re ready to pick your meals! If you forget to select your meals (or don’t want to), Fresh N Lean’s chefs will pick meals for you, taking into account any allergens or exclusions you’ve listed on your account.

Managing Your Subscription

Any changes or modifications – including cancelations – need to be made by Saturday 12:00 pm PST. If you miss this cutoff, the changes will be applied to the following week’s delivery. For this reason, you can expect Saturday mornings to be the busiest time for customer service.

To cancel outright, however, you’ll have to get in touch with a representative. Our team tests and explores the Fresh N Lean cancelation process in this short blog post. If you’re looking to pause your Fresh N Lean subscription, you can skip up to two weeks at a time via your dashboard. This feels a little archaic to me. Most other services let you cancel your subscription with the click of a button. Hopefully Fresh N Lean will catch up with this practice soon.

Customer Service

Fresh N Lean offers comprehensive customer service, providing FAQs as well as email, phone, and live chat communication options. I tested out the company’s live chat system to see how quickly I could get in touch.

It took a couple of minutes to get through to a representative. I was told my place in the queue, and I didn't mind the short wait. Overall, it's much quicker than other means of communication. With other services, I’ve waited days just to get a response to an email!

You can also choose to speak to someone on the phone. Fresh N Lean’s customer service hours are 7:00 am to 7:00 pm PST daily. Keep in mind that the busiest times (and therefore, longest waits) will be right around opening and closing every day, as well as Saturday mornings.]

How Fresh N Lean Compares to Other Meal Delivery Services

  • Fresh N Lean vs. Factor: Both services offer health-conscious prepared meals. Fresh N Lean offers more breakfast and lunch options, but Factor lets you order entrees from different menus no matter what plan you sign up for.

  • Fresh N Lean vs Green Chef: Both services use organic produce and proteins free of antibiotics and hormones. Green Chef’s menu has more international cuisines, but its meal kits require preparation while Fresh N Lean meals are ready to heat and eat.

  • Fresh N Lean vs BistroMD: Both services offer prepared organic meals. But BistroMD offers more meals tailored to medical conditions, and its offerings are more geared toward weight-loss dieting than Fresh N Lean.

The Bottom Line: Is Fresh N Lean Worth It?

Fresh N Lean is one of my favorite services in its particular niche. If heat-and-eat, diet-friendly meals are your thing, then Fresh N Lean was designed with you in mind. If you’re not convinced, worry not! Our expert team has tested the leading providers and compiled a list of the best meal delivery services.

Ultimately, Fresh N Lean isn’t going to be the right choice for everyone. Those of us who prefer to cook our own meals or who don’t stick to a particular diet won’t be able to reap the same benefits from this service. However, Fresh N Lean may just be the best-in-class option for people who need healthy, single-serving meals to suit their lifestyles.
