Overview

Meal delivery services don’t always have the needs of families in mind. But One Potato lets customers choose 2 or 3 meals each week with anywhere from 2 to 6 servings per meal. This is perfect for parents with more than 2 children.

One Potato’s meals are extremely kid-friendly and invite the kids to participate in the prep and cooking process. One Potato even goes so far as to include a roll of slice and bake cookie dough with each box, so you’ll be able to enjoy warm cookies after a healthy dinner with the family. While I love the kid-focused mission of this service, I think HelloFresh’s much larger menu of crowd-pleasing family meals is a better option for most households.

I’m going to dive into the details of how One Potato works and who it's best for. Read on to find all the information you need to make your decision on whether or not this is the right service for your family.

What’s on the One Potato Menu

One Potato’s menu has a decent range of options. It splits up its menu into 5 Seasonal Favorites, 5 Vegan Meals, and 3 One Potato Family Favorites. In addition to the meals, you can order smoothie packs and cookie dough that’s ready to bake and enjoy.

One Potato lets you order anywhere from 2 to 6 servings per meal, but you can only order a maximum of 3 recipes each week. If you want more meals, I recommend Fresh and Easy, which lets you order up to 6 dishes for 6 people per week.

There are no customization options, but you get to choose the meals you want. One Potato provides a full ingredients list for each recipe on its website so you can avoid anything you don’t like. If customization is important to you, Home Chef offers extensive customization options including protein swaps and upgrades.

Each recipe is just a few steps and ready in around 30 minutes (or less). For parents with picky eaters, there are great tips with each recipe card to help get the kids involved in the cooking and encourage picky eaters to give it a try.

There are 5 seasonal favorites that rotate based on what produce is in season, but each option is family-friendly. You’ll also have vegan options to browse and the One Potato Family Favorites. Choose your meals and your add-ons and everything is shipped right to your door.

Unboxing

One Potato packages each box with all the ingredients you need to prepare and cook your meals for the week. You’ll get recipe cards to follow (along with online materials for additional information).

Each meal comes with a plastic bag filled with smaller bags with the ingredients needed. Everything is marked with a colored sticker so you can quickly find the right ingredients for each meal. It’s a lot of plastic to help avoid any spills or leaks, but you’ll have to do some work to recycle it all. The website offers helpful information for recycling all the packaging.

All the ingredients are fresh, so you’ll want to cook the meals within a week of receiving them so nothing goes bad. You don’t need to freeze anything, but it’s good to save some room in your fridge for some of the ingredients.

Cooking With One Potato

Meals from One Potato come with good portion sizes, organic ingredients, and easy-to-follow recipe cards. The meals are healthy and delicious, but they aren’t really suited for special dietary needs. Instead, try a service like Green Chef that offers organic ingredients and caters to diets like vegan and gluten-free.

Your dinner will be ready to eat and enjoy in 30 minutes. Sauces and marinades are already prepared to keep things simple. Everything comes pre-measured and pre-chopped, so you can include your kids in the prep work and not worry about any knives required. You can pull the ingredients straight from the fridge and follow along with the recipe.

If 30 minutes is too much time to spend on dinner, I recommend a prepared meal delivery service. Check out Factor’s heat-and-eat meals, which are ready to eat in just minutes. Like most prepared meals, however, Factor’s dishes are single-serving, but this can be useful if your family has a range of dietary restrictions.

Each delivery also includes a fun special item for the family – slice-and-bake cookie dough. This means you can end your meals with a simple and tasty dessert. Or you can add on smoothie packs that are stored in your freezer and are good for up to a year. You just have to add a cup of your favorite milk and they’re ready in less than 2 minutes.

For grownup-friendly add-ons, I prefer Blue Apron’s gourmet meal kits and ready-made meals. It all depends on what kind of after-dinner treat you prefer.

Shipping & Delivery

One Potato delivers meals either Tuesdays or Wednesdays and covers most of the zip codes in the lower 48 states. It’s a growing company, so if your zip code isn’t currently serviced, you can get on the waiting list to be notified once your area is available.

When placing your initial order, you may have to wait a week to get your first delivery. Each week is planned out in advance based on the number of current subscriptions because One Potato wants to maximize the use of the produce available and avoid food waste. Once you experience that initial wait, you’ll be on a weekly rotation unless you skip.

If you need to skip a week due to travels or a change of plans, you can easily skip a delivery. You’ll just want to make sure that you pause your order before 9 AM PST on Wednesday the week before. Make changes for up to 6 weeks at a time to make this work best for your schedule.

How to Sign Up

One Potato is like many other delivery services that are subscription-based. It’s easy to set up and manage your account on the website.

The first step is to enter some basic information like your name and zip code. This will allow you to create your account and move on to select meals.

One Potato's sign up process asks for First and Last name, email address, a password of your choosing and a delivery zip code.

The next step is to pick your plan. There are a few simple questions about how many people you’re feeding and if you need nut-free or gluten-free. You’ll see the current price for your plan right on this screen.

The final step is to fill in your address and payment information. Once your payment information is in, your account will be active and you can log in to get status updates on your order.

Managing Your Subscription

The online account allows you to update the delivery frequencies and the number of servings. Managing your subscription is easy and the website is very user-friendly.

Customer Service

One Potato has a simple contact us button on the website, which allows you to email the team. I submitted a question and got an answer back within about 2 hours.

Example of a response from the One Potato customer service team when I asked a question about an allergy. They directed me to the menu with ingredients listed. No specific diet plans for allergies.

My question was answered quickly, and the customer service team showed me how to find the answer to my allergy question myself. The email option was quick and smooth, but it's currently the only contact option where some companies have phone numbers or live chat for instant help.

I tested the cancellation process for One Potato to see how easy it would be, and it’s just a few simple clicks on the website. You also have the option to pause your account for up to 3 months if you don’t want to make it permanent.

$8.32 per portion

2 meals with 2 servings per week

$7.99 to $29.95

One Potato serves up healthy meals for the whole family starting at $8.32 per portion. The more servings you order per meal, the lower your price is and you can select as many as 6 portions.

Each week, you’ll receive a free roll of cookie dough that’s ready to slice and bake. If you want any additional flavors, it’s $5.95 per roll. Smoothie packs are another popular add-on. Each one is $5.95 and makes a 14-16 oz smoothie, which is perfect for one adult or 2 kids.

Shipping fees for One Potato vary based on your location. West Coast locations are $7.99, but the further east you go, the higher the price gets with some areas as high as $29.95. As the company grows, those prices may go down.

The Bottom Line: Is One Potato Worth It?

One Potato offers some unique family-friendly options that’ll get healthy meals on your dinner table. The add-ons of smoothies and cookies will help bring some fun to meal time. Browse the menu and see which cookie flavors you can serve for your dessert. Sign up for anywhere from 2 to 6 servings per meal, so it’s great for families of different sizes.

If you need a lot of variety, it might not be the best option because some of the meals repeat each week. There are new seasonal options available, but it isn’t as large of a variety as the top meal delivery services. For example, HelloFresh’s large menu of family-friendly meal kits may be a better choice.
