In 2018, it launched a continuing education program and introduced virtual consultations in 2022. Could you share the story behind the founding of Dietitians On Demand and how it has evolved over the years, from its inception in 2005 to becoming one of the top employers of dietitians in the U.S. today?

Dietitians On Demand was started when founder, Alicia Davis, RD was looking for coverage in her clinical facility for a leave of absence. It didn’t exist. So, she created a company to do just that. Starting with just a handful of local colleagues, they began servicing local hospitals and long-term care centers that needed short-term coverage for their registered dietitian staff. Gradually, it grew to expand into markets outside the Richmond, VA area, and started to take off. With the partnerships of several nationwide foodservice company contracts, operations expanded into what has now become a nationwide staffing firm specializing in the niche market of registered dietitian professionals. 

Dietitians On Demand has expanded its services over time, including offering virtual consultations in 2022. Can you tell us more about this new branch of the company and how it benefits both clients and registered dietitians?

Our registered dietitians are passionate about health and wellness. We have had so many dietitians who have wanted to work in the preventative nutrition space over the years, it is exciting to now be able provide an opportunity for them to see patients directly on our platform. 

Clients can easily book a virtual nutrition counseling appointment on our website and choose from a variety of dietitians with a diverse background of experience and specialties. There are options for one-time consultations, packages, or monthly memberships. There are also options for patients looking to use insurance to cover the cost of their appointments. Clients can quickly and privately meet with a dietitian from the comfort of their home. And dietitians have a unique and flexible employment opportunity.

One unique aspect of your company is that you began hiring all dietitians as W-2 employees in 2015. What motivated this change, and how has it enhanced the experience for both clients and consultant dietitians?

We changed to this employee-based model in order to be able to work with national foodservice partner companies, as well as to be ahead of the curve in offering the best benefits and opportunities for our dietitians. In this way, we are able to offer not only competitive hourly wages, but medical benefits, 401K and CEU assistance, as well. 

In 2018, you launched a continuing education program for dietitians. Could you elaborate on the importance of professional development and how your program empowers dietitians and their peers in the field?

Dietitians On Demand has become a leader in professional development and thought leadership in the industry. Professionals in the dietetic industry know our brand as an excellent source of information, practical handouts, resources and training opportunities to stay on the cutting edge of clinical practice. In addition to dietitians, we even have physician champions who love our brand and tout Dietitians On Demand educational resources on their own.
