Factor provides fully prepared meals that cater to several dietary restrictions. With an extensive menu (35+ dishes to choose from each week) and lots of culinary variety, the service is quite popular with both busy professionals and people on a specific diet.
The menu caters to many diets, including keto, high-protein, vegetarian, and plant-based. And if you have gluten intolerance or allergies, then you'll be glad to know that all meals are produced in a gluten-free facility. More about this in my colleague’s in-depth Factor review.
However, keep in mind that Factor’s meals are not cooked in allergen-friendly facilities. So, if you suffer from severe food allergies, you have to consider the risk of cross-contamination since all the meals are cooked in the same kitchen.
Each item on the menu comes with a full list of ingredients and detailed nutritional information. This makes it easy for you to keep track of what you're eating. I like how prepared meals allow for precise calorie tracking.
Factor also has add-ons like shakes, soups, snacks, juices, and wellness shots. These are perfect for anyone who wants an extra kick of health in their day-to-day diets. Overall, I think Factor is great if you don't want to (or can’t) cook but still want healthy options that cater to specific dietary needs!
On the downside, I think Factor can be expensive over time if you use it regularly. Prices start at $6.19 per serving for the maximum box size (18 single-serving meals per week), which is quite affordable. However, even with the most popular box size (10 meals per week), the cost can get difficult to support in the long run, especially if you include add-ons.
High-quality proteins and certified-organic produce
45+ weekly dishes and add-ons
8 meal plans including protein-packed gluten-free
Current deal: Get $250 off + free shipping
Green Chef offers 8 meal plans to suit different dietary restrictions. The plans cover diets such as plant-based, Mediterranean, and more. You can mix and match between plans, and you have a wide range of colorful tags to guide you through the menu.
The menu includes meal kits inspired by both American and international cuisine. This means you’ll have to do some ingredient prepping and cooking, but each recipe comes with easy-to-follow, chef-crafted recipe cards. During their in-depth review of Green Chef, my colleague found the meal kits easy to prepare and quite adventurous.
The company is USDA-certified organic, although not all ingredients are organic. Most of the produce and eggs are certified organic, but you will be notified if some of the ingredients in your meal kit had to be replaced with conventional ones. The other ingredients, including the meat and fish, are all responsibly sourced and non-GMO.
Green Chef’s meal kits are crafted with balanced nutrients. Each dish contains just the right amount of protein, whole grains, and veggies. If you want a little bit more, there’s an entire Add-ons section to choose from as well.
The Add-ons menu includes cooked protein, breakfasts, lunches, desserts, and more. However, Green Chef can be a little pricey, especially if you get add-ons with every order. They are priced separately from your weekly meal order, so it may not be sustainable for many budgets.
Green Chef is great for big families as you can get between 2 and 4 servings for 2, 4, or 6 people. Prices start at $9.99 per serving for the maximum box size (4 meals for 6 people per week), and Green Chef often offers discounts, so keep your eyes open.
Seasonal and sustainable ingredients
60+ unique recipes per week
Dietary plans include vegetarian, pescatarian, and calorie smart
HelloFresh is a meal delivery service that can satisfy almost everyone's tastes. From dieters to families, busy professionals to grad students with limited kitchen space – everyone can find something on HelloFresh’s massive menu.
The menu includes a wide range of family-friendly dishes. Each recipe is thoroughly tested and kid-approved. This makes HelloFresh a great option for parents looking to feed picky eaters while still incorporating balanced meals into their routines.
There’s also a selection of internationally-inspired dishes for more adventurous palates. To make things easier, HelloFresh offers categories like Easy Prep and Easy Cleanup. So there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing meals that suit your needs. Discover more in our in-depth HelloFresh review.
One feature that really sets HelloFresh apart is its customizable options. With the HelloCustom option (not available for all recipes), you can swap out certain proteins or sides on many dishes, giving you even more variety in your meals.
Despite all this diversity, HelloFresh isn’t great for those with strict dietary restrictions or allergies. If that sounds like you, I recommend checking out a service like Green Chef, which has a wider selection of diet-specific meals.
I think the customizable aspect and overall variety of HelloFresh make it a great option for families and couples. However, keep in mind that there is an additional charge for swapping ingredients, so if you do it too much, your total may be a lot steeper than expected.
Prices start at $3.32 per serving for the maximum order, which is 6 meals for 4 people per week. But if you don’t want to order that much, HelloFresh recommends its most popular plan, which is 3 meals for 2 people per week.
Many customization options with the Customize It tool
30+ unique recipes each week, plus add-ons
Dietary options include vegetarian, calorie-conscious, and carb-conscious
As someone who loves trying out new meal delivery services, I was really impressed by Home Chef. The menu has an amazing variety of dishes to choose from and caters to all kinds of tastes and preferences, making it a real crowd-pleaser.
The service also offers a range of meal types, with something for every schedule. As well as its standard meal kits, look out for super-quick 15-Minute Meal Kits and Oven-Ready dishes that offer little-to-no prep. Then there’s the Culinary Collection for date nights and special occasions. Find out more about what our expert reviewer had to say.
I also like the extensive customization options, which allow you to tailor meals to your preferences. For instance, if you want your Argentinian Steak Flautas served with Impossible Burger instead of beef, you can! Home Chef’s Customize It feature allows diners to swap, upgrade, and even double-up on protein on many of its entrées.
This is a service most suited to people without specific dietary needs. Home Chef offers various low-calorie, low-carb, and vegetarian dishes, but when it comes to allergens and specific needs, Factor may be a better fit.
I appreciate that Home Chef seems to be dedicated to eco-friendliness. The packaging for most items is recyclable or reusable, which is always a plus in my book. The service isn’t free of plastic – it uses them for portioned-out ingredients – I think it’s reasonable compared to some competitors.
With prices starting at $7.99 per serving, Home Chef is quite affordable. However, meals are individually priced, so you may pay more depending on your choices. Protein upgrades also come with additional fees, and so do meals labeled Culinary Collection, Plus, or Family.
Home Chef’s line of easy-prep meal kits
Around 20 quick recipes each week
Only a few dietary options, such as calorie-conscious and carb-conscious
Fresh and Easy by Home Chef is perfect for busy people. It offers up 20+ weekly low-prep recipes that can be customized to your liking. What I enjoyed most was how simple everything was to prepare.
There’s no need for much chopping or peeling, so you won’t spend hours in the kitchen. According to my colleague’s detailed Fresh and Easy review, these recipes are specifically designed for people who don’t have a lot of time on their hands but still want a nutritious home-cooked meal.
I was really impressed by the range of meal types. There are Fast and Fresh meals that can be heated in minutes, Oven- and Grill-ready dishes that just need a little assembly, Express kits for those who want the experience of cooking without all the effort, and entrée salads. There are also plenty of prepared extras (available on the Home Chef core menu), like desserts and bread, to choose from.
Fresh and Easy also has access to Home Chef’s Customize It feature, which is great if you have specific dietary requirements or preferences. However, keep in mind that the option is not available for every meal type.
The only downside I found was that Fresh and Easy doesn’t cater well to vegans. While there were some vegan options available when I tried it out last week, most meals weren’t suitable for such diets. Aside from that, though, I thought Fresh and Easy was well worth trying out – especially if you're looking for something easy and quick to prepare on busy weeknights.
Fresh and Easy features the same pricing system and discounts as Home Chef. This means that, for the maximum order (6 meals per week for 6 people), prices start at $7.99 per serving. I like that you can order for 2, 4, or 6 people, between 2 and 6 people, so every household can enjoy these speedy meal kits.
Wellness-oriented and nutritionist-approved recipes
19+ weekly recipes and add-ons
Dietary options include low-calorie, vegetarian, and carb-conscious
I love Blue Apron for its easy-to-make, gourmet meal kits. There’s a wide variety of unique recipes with flavor combinations you normally only find in a fancy restaurant.
Blue Apron’s menu includes classic American favorites and international flavors. The meals are accessible and easy to make, even if you're not an experienced cook. You can find out more about this in our in-depth Blue Apron review.
Blue Apron has meals inspired by the healthy Mediterranean diet if you want to eat better. The Wellness plan, for instance, includes a mixture of balanced, nutritionist-approved recipes that fit both carb-conscious and low-calorie diets.
It doesn’t cater to more specialized diets like keto or vegan. You may want to check out Green Chef for more diet-friendly options. Blue Apron’s Vegetarian and Wellness menus have solid options for general dietary needs, though.
The service has some great add-ons like appetizers, snacks, sides, and more. This even includes some microwavable lunches and dinners. I like to round out my meal kits with a couple prepared meals for those extra-busy days.
Blue Apron’s app and easy-to-follow recipes make it easy for novice cooks to enjoy. Expand your repertoire with creative dishes like Chimichurri Salmon or Summer Vegetable Pesto Pasta.
I think Blue Apron is an affordable service at $5.74 per serving for the maximum order of 5 meals per week for 4 people. You’ll pay a higher (but still reasonable) price for the minimum order of 2 meals per week for 2 people.
Weight loss meals plans designed by a doctor
150 meals and snacks
6 dietary options, including vegan, gluten-free, and keto
BistroMD claims to help you lose weight while still getting to enjoy delicious meals. I’ll be honest, at first, I thought it sounded too good to be true. However, according to my colleague’s in-depth BistroMd review, reviews from other customers, and my own observations, I can confidently say that BistroMD lives up to its promise.
The meals are created by a doctor in collaboration with registered dietitians. However, they’re also prepared by professional chefs to ensure the quality of each dish. Plus, the flavor and taste are impressive, considering the fact that these meals arrive frozen at your doorstep.
The variety on the menu is pretty great, with over 150 chef-prepared entrees available. BistroMD also has a newer Vegan program, which extends its reach to people on a plant-based diet. Of course, meat eaters also have plenty of meat and fish options.
But what really sets BistroMD apart is the focus on nutrition. Each meal contains high protein and low glycemic index carbohydrates for sustained energy throughout the day. Plus, there is enough culinary variety, so you won’t get bored easily.
My only gripe with BistroMD is that you can't customize your meals. You can change meals in the pre-defined menu, but you don’t have access to the entire menu. Once you choose a program, you can only select the meals that fit that program’s dietary restrictions.
BistroMD offers 7 meal plans, each dedicated to a specific dietary need. As such, there are 2 weight loss plans (one for women and one for men), a gluten-free option designed specifically for those with celiac disease or digestive sensitivities, a heart-healthy program with meals that less than 600 mg sodium per serving, and several others.
Prices start from $8.24 per serving for the largest plan size of 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 6 dinners per week. You also have the option to choose a 5-day plan with only lunches and dinners.
Plenty of kid-friendly options
100+ weekly delicious recipes
Dietary options include low-calorie, low-carb, dairy-free, and more
Martha Stewart’s meal delivery service couldn’t be easier. The company delivers perfectly portioned ingredients and fun, 6-step recipes with well-detailed recipe cards included. Plus, with such an extensive menu (over 100 options), there is room for plenty of culinary diversity.
The menu features a variety of cuisines, including classic American dishes as well as Mexican, Mediterranean, and Korean cuisines. Martha Stewart’s collaboration with the brand adds her signature flavor profiles to each dish. Read more about this in my colleague’s dedicated Marley Spoon review.
Marley Spoon gives you a great way to get meals on the table in 30 minutes, and it’ll even teach you some new skills in the kitchen. With a little practice, you could whip up meals such as Coffee Rubbed Steak & Homemade Chimichurri with Zucchini Corn Agrodolce or Indian Butter Chicken in no time.
I think it’s is a great service for families thanks to the wide range of kid-friendly dishes. Recipes like Turkey Chili with Crispy Tortillas or Oven-Fried Beef Taquitos are major crowd-pleasers, and kids love them!
Marley Spoon’s tags help you find the meals you want, which is convenient since it has such a massive menu. You can filter the menu by dietary needs (such as vegetarian, vegan, low-calorie, and low-carb) or by prep time – look for tags like Under 30 Minutes and One Pot Meal.
Marley Spoon also offers premium meals and customization options. This gives you flexibility when it comes to what ingredients will be added to your box. However, most customizations and premium meals come with an extra charge, so keep your eyes on the price.
Prices start at $2.99 per serving for the largest order (6 meals for 4 people per week). However, I think the service remains affordable for smaller orders as well.
High-quality, plant-based ingredients and clever recipes
16+ delicious recipes each week and add-ons
Dietary options include soy-free, low-calorie, dairy-free, and so on
If you’re one of Eugene’s many vegans, you’ll love Purple Carrot’s plant-based offerings. Purple Carrot features one of the most complex and well-designed 100% plant-based menus on the market, with options for high-protein, nut-free, or gluten-free meals.
And even if you’re not vegan – you’ll find a lot to love about Purple Carrot! This service makes veggies delicious with tantalizing international flavors, including Refried Butternut Tacos with Grape Salad and Slaw or Black Sesame Gnocchi. Read our tried-and-tested Purple Carrot review for more information.
I appreciated the quality of the ingredients on Purple Carrot's menu. Most other veg-friendly meal kits tend to rely heavily on imitation meats and cheese substitutes to fill out their dishes. Instead, Purple Carrot uses fresh vegetables and internationally-inspired recipes to make unique vegan dishes.
Each week, Purple Carrot features 8 meal kit entrées and 8 microwavable prepared meals. Alongside the entrées, you’ll also be able to add breakfast items, lunch, and snacks to your order (only available for the meal kits plan).
I was also impressed by the quality of the ingredients Purple Carrot provides. Every fruit and vegetable has to be at peak freshness and ripeness (no wilted spinach or rock-hard avocados will find their way into your meal kits).
The service believes that food is medicine and strives to provide healthy meals. The plant-based recipes are generally quite healthy but not explicitly designed for weight loss. Check out Factor for nutritionist-designed meals with and without meat.
Purple Carrot’s meal kits start at $8.50 per serving, and you can order between 2 and 4 meals for 2 or 4 people each week. With prepared meals, you can order 6, 8, or 10 single-serving meals per week, and the price per serving is fixed at $13.00.
Simple, easy-to-make recipes
100+ meal kit entrees each week
Dietary options include low-calorie, low-carb, kid-friendly, and more
Dinnerly is a budget-friendly meal delivery service. Our expert Dinnerly reviewer found the level of quality and care that goes into preparing these meal kits surprising considering the affordable pricing. It’s meal kits are well-crafted and made with high-quality ingredients.
Dinnerly has a massive menu of over 100 food items that change each week. The good news is that there is plenty of variety, and most dieters can find something to their liking. However, most recipes are overly basic, with very few ingredients (maximum of 6 ingredients per recipe).
The menu has a healthy balance of American staples and internationally-inspired options. It’s not uncommon to see the Cheesy Juicy Lucy Burger alongside Brown Butter Asparagus-Gruyère Ravioli. Dinnerly also offers extra items like breakfasts, desserts, and even microwavable prepared meals for ultra-easy lunches.
Dinnerly uses high-quality ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers, including antibiotic-free chicken and grass-fed beef. To keep prices low, however, the service doesn’t have many options for specialized diets like keto, paleo, or vegan. There are a couple of options each week, but check out other services like Purple Carrot for fully diet-friendly menus.
It also offers a number of customizable dishes each week (around 40+). For an extra fee (which varies), you can do things like add meat to vegetarian dishes or swap in brown rice for regular rice. Some dishes even offer multiple protein options or plant-based alternatives.
Dinnerly is easily the least expensive service on my list with prices starting at $2.12 per serving. You can order for 2 or 4 people each week, between 2 and 6 meals. I think Dinnerly is a great option as long as you don’t have strict dietary needs.

When choosing the best meal delivery service, there are several essential criteria to consider. Here are some of the most important factors to keep in mind:
Quality and freshness of ingredients: make sure that the service you choose uses only high-quality, fresh products that are sustainably sourced (whenever possible). For instance, Green Chef is a CCOF-Certified Organic Meal Kit Company, so you can trust its selection process.
Specialized dietary options: whether you're looking for vegan, vegetarian, keto, gluten-free, or paleo meals, make sure the service you choose meets these needs. For instance, Purple Carrot is a great service for vegetarians and vegans.
Customizability and flexibility: look for a service that lets you customize your meals by selecting protein options or being able to swap out ingredients you don't like. A great example of such a service is Home Chef.
Prices: make sure that the meal delivery service you pick meets your budgetary limits. For instance, if you are on a tight budget, a service like Dinnerly may work best.
Dinnerly is the most affordable meal delivery service in Eugene. With prices starting at $2.12 per serving and access to a massive menu of 100+ items, this service is one of the most affordable and convenient on the market.
Those counting their calories will enjoy Factor’s Calorie Smart plan. These meals have been approved by a nutritionist and have lower fat and calorie counts. Look out for tags including “Calorie Smart” while browsing the menu.
If eating organic is important to you, Green Chef is a USDA Certified Organic company. Green Chef is also a great option if you are following a specialized diet, such as keto, Mediterranean, or high-protein.
