What I find inconvenient is Eat Clean’s lack of allergy accommodation and customization. You can’t specify gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, etc., so you’ll have to carefully read nutrition labels. However, it does allow you to change your meal plan from 1 week to another, enabling you to explore their variety. 

The service doesn't offer ingredient exclusions or provide accommodations for allergies. It’s even difficult to see what allergens are included in each recipe, as Eat Clean only provides ingredient lists and macronutrient information. Other services like Factor clearly state common allergens found in each dish.

An exciting aspect of Eat Clean is its commitment to reducing waste. The meals arrive fresh, never frozen, and the service expects you to return the packaging for reuse. Simply leave the bags and ice packs outside for pickup on a scheduled day. If you don't return the packaging within 10 days, a small fee will be charged.

In my view, Eat Clean is an excellent option for singles or couples, as you can order anywhere from 4 to 12 single-serving meals weekly. What's more, it's remarkably budget-friendly, with prices starting as low as $8.60 per serving.

What I personally love about Purple Carrot is how it showcases the beauty of vegetables in each recipe. You’ll mostly find vegetables as the feature flavor of each dish. All meals incorporate a balanced mix of complex carbs, healthy fats, and plant-based proteins sourced from a diverse range of vegetables, seeds, nuts, and fruits. 

With an average of 500 to 800 calories per serving, you’ll find weight-loss friendly meals in large enough portions to keep you satisfied and energetic throughout the day. Purple Carrot's menu includes many interesting recipes, drawing worldly inspiration from international cuisines renowned for their plant-focused cooking. I found myself particularly drawn to dishes like the Masala Cashew Fried Rice, which pack a punch of flavor.

In terms of diversity and flavor, Purple Carrot's meals are hard to beat. A few minor aspects may tilt the balance towards Green Chef for some, such as the ability to order more servings and the flexibility to mix meal kits and prepared meals in 1 order.

Pricing is another factor where Purple Carrot holds its own. Starting at $8.50 per serving for the maximum number of meal kits, it offers options to order for 2 or 4 people and between 2 or 3 meal kits per person. HelloFresh typically offers 2 vegan dishes per week. This is more than what many services provide. However, the options are somewhat limited for strict vegans seeking more than 2 meals a week. Where HelloFresh really shines is in its easy, family-friendly meal kits. It claims to test each recipe 200 times to ensure quality. While I can't attest to that exact number, I found that the recipes I tried were remarkably straightforward and easy to follow.

The Family Friendly menu is a go-to for simple, child-approved flavors. Other menus cater to different dietary needs and include Fit  and Wholesome, Pescatarian, and Quick and Easy.

A great benefit of HelloFresh is that it allows you to order from the full menu at any time, regardless of the plan you initially choose. This makes it an excellent service if you value variety or desire a broad selection of meal kits.

In terms of pricing, the more you order, the less you pay per serving. Prices start at $3.32 per serving, with the exact rate dependent on your order size. HelloFresh lets you customize orders ranging from 2 to 6 meals for 2 or 4 people each week.

Each week, Home Chef presents you with an array of over 40 unique recipes. The customization feature increases these options, allowing you to transform your meals based on your protein preference. For instance, you can substitute Impossible Burger for ground beef in many dishes.

Customizable meals show a green Customize It button at the bottom of the recipe image that you can click to see all the customizable options. Meals with Impossible Burger options include an additional Impossible Burger badge on the top-right corner of the recipe image. 

However, as I discovered, Home Chef might not fully cater to 100% vegan needs. The options for plant-based protein swaps are often limited each week. You’ll find about 6 to 7 vegetarian dishes, some of which are vegan. If plant-based meals are your priority, Green Chef could be a more suitable alternative. Despite these limitations, Home Chef excels in accommodating other diet preferences. You can sift through the main menu for meals that are carb-conscious and calorie-conscious, which can be beneficial for those aiming for weight loss. While there's no explicit menu for diets like keto or paleo, by closely examining the ingredients and nutritional breakdown of each recipe, you can still locate fitting dishes.

The service also provides the option to exclude certain ingredients, such as nuts and shellfish. However, it's important to note that Home Chef isn’t an allergy-friendly service and doesn't offer guarantees against cross-contamination. Green Chef is a more allergy-friendly meal kit.

Meals also arrive as kits, so you can exclude animal products in vegetarian meals, like cheeses, creamy sauces, and eggs, in order to make your meal vegan. This is inconvenient if you’re hoping for meals to arrive 100% vegan and weight-loss-friendly.

Beyond main dishes, Home Chef's menu is peppered with exciting extras and bundles, offering everything from breakfast items, sides, pre-mixed salads, soups, and drinks. The Breakfast Duo, for example, provides convenient meal ideas like croissant sandwiches accompanied by canned lattes.

Home Chef's wide-ranging menu and customizations make it a flexible service for those with more specific dietary restrictions like vegan, vegetarian, or pescatarian. 

As for pricing, it's simple and starts at $7.99 per serving, with the cost fluctuating based on what you select from the menu since each item is priced individually. You're free to order anywhere between 2-6 meals for groups of 2, 4, or 6 people, with larger orders proving to be more cost-effective.

What’s convenient is that oven-ready meals arrive in recyclable baking trays. You just need to organize the ingredients in the pan and let the oven do the rest. Additionally, meal kits labeled Express bring you mostly prepped ingredients with cook times of 15 minutes or less, significantly reducing your time in the kitchen.

The Fast and Fresh dishes from Fresh and Easy are perfect for those in a hurry, as they can be quickly heated in the oven or microwave. Fresh and Easy also has ready-to-eat salads on the menu, featuring pre-cooked proteins that require no additional heating. For instance, you could switch out regular milk for almond or coconut milk from your own pantry. If a meal contains meat, it's easy to omit it for a vegan alternative from your pantry.

Customization is especially useful in mixed-diet households, ensuring no ingredients go to waste. Despite its somewhat limited plant-based offerings, Blue Apron distinguishes itself with a diverse menu and added features.
